 Activists of the TDP laid a siege to the Collectorate here on Saturday in protest against what they called the inordinate delay in the allotment of house sites to the shelterless poor of the town.
A large number of the party cadre came in a rally to the Collectorate resenting the “failure of the Revenue Department” to allot house sites at Raghunathapalem here despite sanction of pattas to nearly 3,885 people more than three years ago.
Party senior leader and Khammam MLA Tummala Nageswara Rao and others squatted on the main road to press for immediate solution to the long-pending issue. Later, the protesters made a vain attempt to move towards Raghunathapalem in a bid to handover the lands to the patta-holders.
However, the town police prevented TDP MP other leaders from proceeding ahead.Tension broke out in front of the Two Town police station when the protesters tried to break the police cordon.
Speaking on the occasion,Sri Nageswara Rao alleged that the poor of the town were deprived of house sites despite holding pattas. “Two Chief Ministers and two Collectors have changed, but the fate of the shelterless people of the town remained unchanged,” he said.
The revenue officials concerned rushed to the spot and apprised Mr. Rao of the efforts being made by the department to allot the house sites at the earliest.They tried to attribute the delay to some “technical problems” in acquiring the land originally allotted for Rajiv Swagruha scheme.
However TDP MP took strong exception to their explanation and wanted them to find a quick solution to the housing problem of thousands of poor people. Collector Siddharth Jain spoke to Mr. Rao over telephone and assured him that the issue would be resolved in four weeks.
